Projects
WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)
- 128 million people in India lack safe drinking water
- 21% of all communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe drinking water
- In rural India, 67% still practice open defecation
India Partners is serving these needs by providing water wells in rural villages and giving people access to clean drinking water, minimizing diseases and deaths caused by waterborne parasite, as well as reducing the amount of time spent collecting water each day.
Schools, Literacy and Training
- 37% of the people over the age of 15 in India cannot read or write
- 1/3 of India's children cannot attend elementary school, usually because there is no local school to attend
India Partners is serving these needs through literacy training for children and families in remote villages, educational outreach to those in prison, computer training for the disabled, and tailoring schools for women and their families.
Food and Shelter
- 35% of the world's malnourished children under age 5 live in India, totaling 55 million in India, alone
- 42% of Indians live on less than $1 per day
India Partners is serving these needs through the gift of a buffalo for needy families, bunk beds for children at an orphanage, rebuilding homes lost in the 2004 Asian tsunami, and housing for those learning vocational skills.
Health Care
- In India, infant mortality is 63 deaths per 1000 children
- 128 million people in India lack safe drinking water
- 70% of all recorded cases of leprosy in the world occur in India
India Partners is serving these needs by providing medicines to families in need, conducting medical clinics in jungle villages, and using mobile medical vans to travel to remote areas with little access to health care.
Self-Sufficiency
- 42% of Indians live on less than $1 per day.
- Job skills and income generating initiatives are essential for those struggling to live from one day to the next.
India Partners is serving these needs by providing livestock, seeds and fertilizers to poor farmers, fishing nets to fishermen who lost their livelihood in the 2004 Asian tsunami, microloans for small income generating initiatives, and wheelchairs and hand-powered tricycles to the physically disabled.
