The Evangelical Fellowship of India Commission on Relief (EFICOR) is an Indian Christian relief and development organization, which partners with the local church, to uplift the poor and marginalized in India. EFICOR serves the poor and marginalised irrespective of caste, creed, or religion in situations of poverty, injustice, and disaster. Through partnering with EFICOR, India Partners is able to send relief after any disaster that may occur in the country of India. India Partners has worked with EFICOR after such disasters as the 2005 earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir, the 2007 flooding in Bihar and the 2009 Andhra Pradesh floods.
History of EFICOR
EFICOR began in 1967 as a unit of the Evangelical Fellowship of India when a drought that year caused severe famine in the state of Bihar. The members of the EFI responded to the need by raising money through an appeal in their official magazine. In 1971, India was flooded with refugees from neighboring East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The international community wanted a local agency through which they could act. EFICOR was asked to be that channel and an EFI Committee on Refugees was established. In 1980, EFICOR became independent of EFI, establishing itself as a separate nonprofit organization. Since that time, EFICOR has moved from relief to development, from resourcing to capacity-building, and from motivating evangelicals to networking with them.
