UN Millennium Development Goals on Health

Nations Committed to Health Issues

Three of the eight UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are focused on health issues. With so much going on in the United States regarding universal health care, we often lose sight of the health issues in developing countries around the world, and especially in India where health care is not easily accessible.

First Goal

The first goal, Child Health, targets the horrific number of children in developing countries who do not reach their fifth birthday because of malnutrition or preventable diseases. Proper medical care can help to combat these early deaths.

Target 1: Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate.

Second Goal

The second goal, Maternal Health, targets pregnant women to help ensure proper nutrition and pre-natal care.

Target 1: Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio.
Target 2: Achieve universal access to reproductive health.

Third Goal

And the final goal, Combating HIV/AIDS, has three targets, the third of which is focused on malaria and other major diseases such as tuberculosis.

Target 3: Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.

India Partners works with Orphans Faith Home, through the Daya Medical Center, and Reaching Hand Society, with the building of St. Luke’s Hospital and their village medical camps, to address the multifaceted issues of health at all stages of life in a developing country. Read our “Bringing Hope and Healing to the Villages” article for the most recent report on medical camps in India.
